History of the Rolex Datejust

The Rolex Datejust is one of the brand’s most popular timepieces. This watch model was released in
1945 at the time of Rolex’s 40 th anniversary. One of the signature features of the Rolex Datejust is that it
was the first wristwatch with an automatic date display change function.
Although the Rolex Datejust has seen certain upgrades throughout its history, the overall aesthetics of
this model have remained quite consistent. It’s an easily recognizable Rolex model no matter what

The First Rolex Datejust Watches

When the first Rolex Datejust was created, the watch featured an 18k gold material with waterproof
36mm Oyster case and a Jubilee bracelet. It also included a date display located at the 3 o’clock mark. In
1947, as celebration of its 100,000 Rolex Datejust watch, Rolex created a special Datejust model. This
model was so special that it was given to Winston Churchill, Britain’s Prime Minister.
Throughout the rest of the 1940’s, the Rolex Datejust enjoyed much popularity, and a two-tone yellow
gold and stainless steel model variety was added to the collection. After that time, the Rolex Datejust
was also made in stainless steel and rose gold options.

Updates to the Rolex Datejust

In the years that followed, the Rolex Datejust would see various upgrades occur. The first was in 1955
when intermediate gears and spring mechanism capabilities were added to the Datejust to allow the
date display to change immediately at midnight. In the past, the Rolex Datejust date display would
gradually change. With the new functions, the date display update would occur right at 12 o’clock.
Another update to take place in the mid 1950’s was the addition of the Cyclops magnifying lens. This
upgrade made it possible to see the date display with ease. It’s also one of the signature features of the

Rolex Datejust watch to this day.

Also taking place in the 1950’s, Rolex introduced the special Turn-O-Graph version of the Rolex Datejust.
This version was created for United States Air Force pilots returning from active service. The Turn-O-
Graph Datejust was also sold to the general public. Known as the Thunderbird Datejust watch, this
model had a rotating bezel that was marked to 60 minutes. The original Turn-O-Graph has been
discontinued but it helped lay the framework for other Rolex watch models.

Later Years of the Rolex Datejust

In the 1970s, the Rolex Datejust was updated with the 3135 calibre movement. This new calibre
improved the overall accuracy of the watch.
Taking the Rolex Datejust even further with new improvements, the brand introduced the Rolex
Datejust II in 2007. This different Rolex model has a self-winding mechanical movement, calibre 3136,
and a 41mm case.
The later models of the Rolex Datejust featured a 41mm case version of the original. This Rolex Datejust
version was released in 2016 and is available in rose gold or a stainless steel/yellow gold combination.
When compared with the Datejust II, this more recent Rolex Datejust model has a smaller bezel and
smaller indexes.
