History of the Rolex Day-Date

The first Rolex Day-Date watch was introduced in 1956. The initial Rolex Day-Date models featured an
Oyster case, President bracelet, and full day window with date. To this day, the Rolex Day-Date is seen
as a premier, must-have luxury watch, even though it has undergone few major updates during its time.

Rolex introduced the Reference 6510 and Reference 6511 in 1956. These watches offered enticing

classic models. The Oysterquartz Day-Date watch had a long run, being produced for 25 years until it

Later in the century, Rolex added to its model offerings with the 182XX series. These watches featured a
Rolex 3155 calibre movement and a double quick-set function. The double quick-set function allowed
the wearer to change the date and day on the watch with ease. The quick-set function was initiated
simply by pulling the crown out in its first position then rotating it one way or another depending on
whether the wearer wanted to change the date or day.

When the year 2000 arrived, Rolex introduced its new updated Day-Date at Baselworld 2000. The six-
digit Day-Date was released, with reference number series 118XXX being put into motion. With this new
Rolex Day-Date series, the watch bracelet and clasp were updated. Rolex kept the in-house calibre 3155
in place as well as the 36mm Oyster case.

In 2008, Rolex introduced its Day-Date II, a new Rolex model with a 41mm Oyster case. As many watch
wearers had begun to express an interest in larger case sizes, Rolex answered the call with this new Day-
Date model. Reference 218XXX versions featured a Rolex calibre 3156 movement. The Rolex Day-Date II
was produced until 2015.

The current Rolex Day-Date, the 228XXX series, is the most technologically awe-inspiring version of all
Day-Date watches. This watch released in 2015 features two watch sizes, 36mm and 40mm. In addition
