History of the Rolex Oyster Perpetual

The Rolex Oyster Perpetual was an evolution of the original Rolex Oyster, a watch created in 1926 which
was the first waterproof, dustproof watch. In 1931, the brand patented a self-winding movement which
equated with a perpetually wound watch. It wasn’t until 1950 when the first named Rolex Oyster
Perpetual would be introduced.

When the Rolex Oyster Perpetual watches were first made, the calibre 645 and calibre 1030 comprised
the watch movements. In 1959 and onwards, all Rolex Oyster Perpetual No Date watches featured
automatic movements and both a screw down back and a screw down crown.

The early models of the Rolex Oyster Perpetual had a plastic crystal and stainless steel construction.
Fluted or milled bezels were both available during this time. The 1560 and 1570 calibre movements
were used with the earlier models of Rolex Oyster Perpetual watches up to the 1980s.

In 1964, the first women’s Rolex Oyster Perpetual was created, featuring a delicate 24.6mm case size, 26
jewel calibre 1130, and oyster or jubilee bracelet. In 1974, the women’s Rolex Oyster Perpetual received
a new calibre, 2030, with 28 jewels. The size of the women’s Rolex Oyster Perpetual increased in 1983
and a new calibre was also introduced at this time, the calibre 2130. In 1995, the calibre 2135 took over
on the women’s Oyster Perpetual model.

A significant change occurred to the Rolex Oyster Perpetual in 1991. This was the year the watch crystal
changed from plastic to sapphire. The sapphire crystal proved to be more durable and scratch-resistant
in form.

Modern Day Rolex Oyster Perpetual

In 2014, the Rolex Oyster Perpetual experienced many changes, the major one being the release of four
new sizes. The brand introduced these new size Rolex Oyster Perpetual watches at Baselworld which
included 26mm (calibre 2231), 31mm (calibre 2231), 34mm (calibre 3130), and 36mm (calibre 3130)
versions. The next year, Rolex introduced its 39mm (calibre 3132) Rolex Oyster Perpetual model.

Presently, the Rolex Oyster Perpetual is one of the more popular Rolex watch models. With so many
choices and watches for both men and women to wear and appreciate, it’s easy to see how the Rolex
Oyster Perpetual is a fan favorite.
